National Television Awards 2012

31-01-2012

Another year of the National Television awards has been and gone with another round of our favourite TV stars being chauffeured home at the end of the night with shiny silver awards in hand.

There was a bit of a fashion faux pas phenomenon on the red carpet this year, but in among the sea of over the top bling, over zealous use of sunbeds and a number of painfully pink get-ups were a select few that really got it right.

NTA fashion

jaquelineNTAHollyoaks actress Rachel Shenton kept it classy with this classic line fish tail gown in a very on-trend burgundy, She topped it all off with beautifully painted black nails; very cute.

Believe it or not another style leader on the night happened to be from the cast of Towie. Lydia Bright pulled off this simple black gown beautifully without overdoing it with garish accessories. Who said Essex girls weren’t classy.

Corrie star Michelle Keegan hit the graceful nail on the head in this nude fishtail Willamina gown by Rachel Gilbert.

New comer to the awards and winner of the newcomer award for her role as Lauren in East Enders, Jaqueline Jossa, also deserves a special mention for her stunning frock. The 19 year old caught our eyes with her gorgeous full length black and maroon gown with lace detail.

Golden Globes Glamour

18-01-2012

Each year around this time fashionistas everywhere focus their sights on the red carpet that will be rolled out at a series of glamorous events over the award ceremony season. It is the fashion we spy at these events that will influence our formal fashion choices for the year to come. As such, it is only appropriate that we share with you our favourite gowns of the first of these fabulous evenings; the Golden Globes.

Golden Globes 2012As nude tones and classic black seemed to be the order of the day we picked a couple of each that really got our shopping minds all in a tizz.

First up, the nudes. Charlize Theron and Kate Beckinsale both looked pretty in pink in their respective Dior Couture and Roberto Cavalli gowns. The fish tail silhouette appeared to be back with a vengance, Theron’s gown spicing up the classic shape with a sexy split up the front with gathered detail.

Moving on to the LBDs (Long Black Dresses). Mila Kunis, Dior’s new celeb face, looked nothing but glamorous in a flowing black Dior number. Again, the classic look was mixed up a little by Evan Rachel Wood in a stunning feathered Gucci gown.

Now we’ve got the idea all that’s left is buying something similar for ourselves, or making it, we hear sewing machines are going cheap at the moment. Anythings worth a try to look as amazing as these ladies, right?

Queen’s New Year List Honours Fashion

03-01-2012
Each year the Queen honours a select group of inspirational people by adding a couple more prestigious letters to their names. We’re talking MBE’s and the Queen’s New Year Honours list. This year a whole bunch of amazing fashion industry greats were awarded, inspiring us more than ever to be fabulous in 2012.

Among the names now with new email signatures were shoe designer Emma Hope, jewellery designing husband and wife team John Ayton and Annoushka Ducas, and Biba founder Barbara Hulanicki.

But, the new MBE we’re most excited about was founder and director of Fashion East, Lulu Kennedy. As a non-for-profit organisation, Fashion East gives young and up and coming designers the chance to showcase their wears at London and Paris Fashion weeks. Without this initiative the likes Gareth Pugh, House of Holland and Jonathan Saunders of would be absent from our lives so, thank you Lulu and congrats!

Christmas Knits

30-11-2011

This season our Grandmas will be proud, vintage Christmas knits are back with a bang and raring to go. Reindeer, cable knits and snowflake patterns were only popular with the Bridget Joneses of yester-year, but step onto the high-street this season and you shouldn’t be seen without a cosy variation of this trend.

ASOS knits

Some of our favourite bargains in the knitwear department came from the Queen of all things discount and style; ASOS. Get snugly in a gorgeous mustard Vila cable knit grandad cardi for only £25. Accessorise with a £9 ASOS cable fur bobble hat (the fur and knit combo is very hot this season) and some £7.50 fairisle converter gloves. Don’t forget Aztec prints and oversize blanket cardis are also very popular this winter, don’t settle for expensive, this red and black number is a very reasonable £45.

Urban xmas look

As chiconomistas we are obviously all about getting the best for less and, for those of us who are a little bit in love with Urban Outfitters, this find is a little bit exciting. Urban Outfitters are offering 15% off their Christmas catalogue which, drum roll please, is full of fabulous knits. This look pretty much says it all but we think the best part is definitely these Silence and Noise Mono Fair Isle knited trousers which will be yours for £38.25 with the special discount. For any of these lovely winter goodies simply enter SANTA at the checkout.

The Shopping Revolution

14-11-2011

It’s all about vintage inspired looks this season but not when it comes to the actual act of shopping. Let us introduce you to the concept of contemporary shopping, in the form of Ariella.com.

Upon entering the Ariella site you’ll find a stunning line of couture cocktail and evening-wear dress designs featuring elegant feminine tailoring and luxurious fabrics.  Exciting, yes, but cocktail dress shopping is hardly revolutionary. 3D cocktail dress shopping however, is. If you’ve ever wished you could see the way that fabric falls or how that shape fits the body, the textures, or the way the light might reflect those sequins, all from the comfort of your cosy home, then 3D shopping is your new best friend.

With a whole host of glamorous fashion awards under their beautiful belts it’s no surprise the Ariella couture line also comes with grand price tags and will set you back upwards of £180. However, for day-dream’s sake  we thought we’d share a couple of our favourites with you…

 ariella 1

Bring out your fiery side with Caprice, this sexy scarlet number is bold and beautiful at £240. Bringing a bit of 30’s femininity to the mix, the £510 black lace Gabriella dress would make us as star of our very own fairytale. The final dress to catch our eyes with a glint of glitzy sequin and bead detail is the gold fishtail Gisele dress which comes in at a show stopping £650.

To see these designs in all their 3D glory you’ll need a compatible monitor and a pair of 3D glasses. We hope this shopping revolution will soon spread its wings to the likes of ASOS and other purse-friendly sites , but in the meantime check out the rest of fabulous Ariella here. A girl can wish.

Coat Yourself

08-11-2011

We think it’s about time to take a look at this season’s staple item. Jack of all trades, the coat. In it’s many shapes, fabrics, sizes and prices the coat is the item we all need in the cold winter months so it’s worth taking the time to find the perfect one. After all, with the right coat you could be wearing PJ’s underneath and still look fab.

This season it’s all about traditional prints, retro shapes, colour blocking and fabulous fur.

dorothy coats

If you’re after a safe option that simply keeps you warm and could work with anything, go for something with feminine tailoring and simple colours; boozy burgundies, blacks, navvies, tans and mustards are the go.  This 40’s esque taped coat from Dorothy Perkins comes in at £69.00 with a choice of burgundy or tan.

 plaid coats

If you’re feeling slightly more adventurous, classic plaid, check and houndstooth patterns are the way to go with retro silhouettes; 60’s, 70’s and 40’s are rife this season. This cute vintage-look £75 Fearne Cotton checked tartan caped coat can be snapped up from very.co.uk. If £75 is still a bit pricey, this plaid print H&M coat is just as gorgeous and comes in at a very tidy £24.99.

fur duo

Lastly if you’re a bit of a wild child, diva or fancy trying out the pimptastic look in the warmest coat going, a fur coat will serve you well this autumn/winter. Now as was all being all about living stylishly for less, us chiconomistas are also pretty fond of animals. If you too don’t fancy the idea of slinging one of our fury friends over your shoulder, one of these stunning faux fur numbers will do the trick.  You could grab yourself a Topshop premium faux fur panel coat for £110.00 but, as the aim of the game is chiconomising, this equally striking number from ASOS is only £68.00 down from £85.

Veggie Chic

02-11-2011

Living stylishly isn’t all about what you wear or what beauty products you smother yourself in (although we love those two elements equally), sometimes the simplest of necessities can be the one that makes you feel the most fab. We’re talking about food. Whether you’re already a convert to the veggie lifestyle or just interested in giving it a try, we thought a little guide to the most stylish and affordable joints in the capital might just be to your taste.

vanilla black

Kicking off at the high end of town we have Vanilla Black, with a reputation as one of the finest vegetarian eateries in the UK a 2 course meal here with the girls in your lunch break will set you back £18.50 per head. This is suprisingly reasonable considering the high level contemporary cookery that goes on in the kitchens of this stylish spot.

Amico bio

If it’s a more simple vegetarian fare you’re after then Amico Bio is deffinitly where it’s at. Sourced from a family run farm in Italy, the vegetarian produce is whipped up into delicious, simple, affordable italian food. treat your body with a slice of green living for less than £10 a dish.

Last but certainly not least on this on this mini vego guide has to be Food for Thought. This extremely popular lunch spot for busy London workers, the vegetable loyal and the carnivorous alike, it’s honest vegetarian food in the cosiest of atmospheres. A lunch time meal deal will cost you as little as £6-£8, returning you to the office full and happy.

We hear organic, green living is the new black so why not ditch the steak one lunch time and try out one of these beauties, your body and your wallet will love you for it.

01-11-2011

We’d like to introduce you to the concept of eco-conscious, affordable nail pampering in the form of NIYOT. Only a spring chicken on the beauty products scene, launched in September this year, NIYOT is focused on two things we love; classic colour and care for the environment. Their new premium nail polish range is free from nasties such as Formaldehyde, Toluene, DBP and Parabens, not to mention it’s been no where near animals during the testing process.

nail polishes

The range, organically made entirely in the UK by the way, represents a return to classic nail colour with sexy CEO blood red, vibrant and bubbly fire red and our all time favourite pillar box red. Nudes and pinks have been promised to follow this striking collection, with plans to expand their range to include non-toxic topcoats and nail-polish removers over the coming months.

We’re excited about digging our nails into some of these fab, very reasonably priced products. Get your hands on the range here.

Halloween- Creepy Costumes

27-10-2011

So over the last 2 days we’ve got your bellies full with some delicious edibles and given you some tips on how to create that perfectly petrifying atmosphere with the best Halloween decorations. Today, its all about freaky fashion as we show you the Chiconomistas way to create that perfect costume for your party. Here are some of the basics to get your DIY mind active…

Queen of the Damned

vampire queen

Look stunning in a home- made Queen of the Damned costume. Pair a feature black dress, like this £19 (down from £40) ASOS one sleeve dress, with a pair of black heels or wedges (try some New Look sequined wedges), a masquerade mask and a Gothic pendant.  We found this Cornelli lace mask in the Accessorize Halloween collection for only £6. The gem pendant is an ASOS number and in true  ASOS style is on sale for £18 (instead of £30). Add to the look with some smokey eye make-up, a severe hair up-do  and black nail polish/lipstick.

 Cat Woman

cat woman

Bring out your inner feline with this cat woman combo that would do Halle Berry proud. Grab a pair of imitation leather leggings like these £14.99 trousers from H & M and pair them with a faux fur waistcoat (everywhere this season) like this white bargain also from H & M. Give it the catty finish with a £10 sequined cat mask from Urban Outfitters Halloween collection and some big cat print faux fur and leather gloves from H & M (£6.49 down from £12.99). Don’t forget to add a splash of stunning red lippy and smokey eye makeup to complete your look.

What we love even more about the DIY approach to Halloween is that, unlike a costume shop Dracula outfit that could attract some odd looks on the tube, all of the parts of your home-made costume can be worn again. Everyone loves a good investment.

Halloween: Devilish Decorations

26-10-2011

Yesterday we got your taste buds going with some delicious Halloween recipes, but a party isn’t a party with out killer decorations. Here’s some of our top tips for creating that spooky atmosphere without breaking the bank.

template

Candelabras are always a Gothic addition to any atmosphere so why not have a go at making your own. Print off these two templates as big as your printer will let you, then trace the image onto some black cardboard. Using a stanley knife (or something similarly sharp) cut the templates out and slip them together. Pop a few around the party room along side some real tea candles and you’ve got your own classy version of all hallows eve.

There’s something to be said for going old school every now and then, so why should Halloween be any different. If you’ve got a pristine dining/ living room (which we all obviously do) then why not try the well-loved cotton wool trick. gently pull a piece of cotton wool apart until it becomes a thin web, then drape it over things like fire places and ornaments.

halloween

If you don’t feel you have the magic DIY touch, then these  decoration ideas and much more are also available to purchase, ready-made, for a very modest price. Our favourite collections are Urban Outfitters ‘Witching Hour’ and the ‘Haunted’ collection from dressityourself.co.uk. These creepy paper plates can be found in both collections for under  £7.

Halloween: Freaky Food and Drink

25-10-2011

Stuck for ideas for the perfect home Halloween party? We’ve got a couple of tricks up our sleeves for doing it on the cheap that we’d love to share with you over this week’s run up to the 31st….

Stay tuned for freaky food and drink, devilish decorations, creepy costumes and more.

Today we’re kicking it off with a couple of our favourite scarily scrummy food and drink recipes to get the party started.

Love at first bite – Cocktail

Decorate this Halloween cocktail with spooky sweets for the perfect party tipple, delicious.

cocktail

Ingredients

  • 25ml/1fl oz vanilla vodka
  • 1 tbsp sour apple liqueur
  • 2 tsp butterscotch schnapps
  • 25ml/1fl oz fresh pressed apple juice
  • 1 tsp grenadine

Preparation method

  1. Place the vodka, apple liqueur, butterscotch schnapps, apple juice and grenadine into a cocktail shaker, add a handful of ice and shake well.
  2. Strain the cocktail into a glass and garnish with sweets.

Top tip: stock up on spooky drink accessories from somewhere like Poundland, they’ll cost next to nothing but they’ll make all the difference.

Whole Halloween Pumpkin dip

Use garlic bread or a French stick to dip in this wicked shared starter.

 pumpkin

Ingredients

  •  1 x 2-2½ kg pumpkin
  • 400 ml cream
  • 1 garlic clove, crushed
  • 1 cup sourdough croutons
  • 150 gm gruyere, grated
  • sea salt & freshly ground pepper

Preparation Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 200 (180 fan forced).
  2. Cut the lid off the pumpkin and scoop out the seeds (hang on to the lid as you will need it later).
  3. In a small pan heat the cream, garlic and a little seasoning. Set aside to infuse for 20 mins.
  4. Layer the cavity of the pumpkin with croutons, gruyere and season. Pour cream and garlic mixture over the top and replace the pumpkin lid.
  5. Cook in the oven for 1- 1.5 hours until tender when pierced.
  6. Move pumpkin onto a plate and then carefully scoop flesh away from the sides mixing well with the filling. Take care not to make a hole in the pumpkin skin, we don’t want any disasters.
  7. Serve and enjoy!

Cooking tip: If the skin starts to brown too much, not very attractive, cover in foil and place back in oven for remaining time.

Spider web cheesecake

Impress your guests with you artistic talents and let them leave with a spookily sweet taste in their mouths.

cheesecake

Ingredients

  • 7g of gelatine (unflavoured)
  • 4 tablespoons of cold water
  • 200g softened cream cheese
  • 100g icing sugar
  • 100ml of whipping cream (whipped into stiff peaks)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • 23cm prepared digestive/ ginger nut base
  • 25g plain chocolate or chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon of butter
  • 225g crushed digestive or ginger nut biscuits
  • 60g melted butter

Preparation Method

  1. Preheat oven to 180 (gas mark 4)
  2. Mix together the crushed biscuits and melted butter in a medium bowl. Press mixture into a 23cm tart tin and firmly press into the bottom and sides.
  3. Bake in preheated oven for 8 minutes
  4. Meanwhile… in a small saucepan sprinkle the gelatine over water and let it stand for a minute. After stirring until dissolved take off the heat and cool slightly.
  5. Get out your best mixing bowl and beat the cream cheese and sugar within an inch of their lives (or until smooth). Pour into the prepared biscuit base.
  6. In a microwave slowly heat the chocolate and butter and stir until smooth. Pour into a resealable plastic bag, cutting a small hole in the corner of the bag to make a DIY piper.
  7. Pipe a circle in the centre of the cheese cake and then pipe circles at 2cm intervals out from the centre. Finally – gently drag a skewer through the circles toward the outer edge, repeating to complete the spider web image.
  8. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before getting into it with your guests.

This recipe is enough for 8 people so perfect for that home Halloween gathering. Try placing a couple of plastic spiders on the cake to give it a bit more authenticity.
