Get the distressed look

Lately, Daisy Lowe, Pixie Geldof and Alice Dellal have been setting the style mood for London.

Plaid shirts, acid denim, fishnet tights and distressed tees are lovingly coveted by this London set as well as designers such as Alexander Wang and more recently, Balmain. Why have I been loving this trend so much? Because it’s one of the only trends I’ve seen that can stay true to the word ‘effortless’ as its devotees, who are often photographed intoxicated with their clothes most likely on back to front and a shoe missing, will prove.

1. The trick to not messing up the messed up look is to get the right key pieces and colours. Think your boyfriends over-worn flannel shirt, woolly cardigans from the charity shop and plenty of comfortable basics to experiment with. Colour wise, opt for dull and subtle shades such as black, white, grey and navy.

2. Ripped holes in denim and ladders in tights are integral to the trend and the more DIY they come across the better, as this look is about as individual as fashion gets.  Use a pen knife to cut a frayed hole into a pair of jeans and dig out all the old pairs of tights that you thought were too manky to wear. They’re not, as long as you still look under 25 they’re cool now, okay?

3. Don’t worry about ruining anything, the plus side to distressing clothes is that whatever the end result it will still come off looking like you meant it to look that way, even if you didn’t.

4. Know when to stop, this is the only downside! I knew I’d cut one hole too many when my friend told me I looked like I’d been attacked and that was before I’d left the house.
