Umu

This is a Japanese restaurant with a difference. It doesn't come cheap but is worth the price tag.

Given the current climate you might feel that experiencing a nine-course traditional Japanese taste test menu is perhaps out of touch with the times.  Lavish, yes - but necessary?  Absolutely.  Umu is one of those rare treats you never forget.  From the minute I stepped through the door I was transported to another world.  With dark teak and sleek lines, the interior is both stylish and quintessentially Japanese.  Umu is unique in that it is London’s only restaurant to serve Kyoto style cuisine.  Sampling the best Kyoto Kaiseki – traditional Japanese set menu, takes food to an elevated form of art.

Highlights included a cut of seared tuna belly so fresh and meaty and the best wagyu beef I’ve tasted outside of Japan.  Cows massaged to ensure tenderness, fish flown in directly from Japan?  It might all sound a tad excessive but trust me, the result is well worth it. The emphasis here is on quality and all menu’s are produced using seasonal ingredients, nearly all of which are sourced directly from Japan.  Clearly pitching itself at a higher level than any other restaurant in London, Umu is the ultimate treat for any Japanese food aficionados.  If you’re looking for style and substance then Umu is the place for you.

Cost: £135 for nine courses

Overall: 10/10
