How to use voucher codes

posted by Michelle on Nov 3, 2009

Everyone’s using them, everyone’s promoting them, but do you understand what a voucher code actually is? And do you know how to use them? Well here’s our whistlestop guide to the world of the voucher code.

What is a voucher code?

A voucher code is quite simply, a code created by a brand or retailer which when entered before checkout will give you a discount, free delivery or money off. The retailer picks the code and chooses which website, publications, get the code. It can be made up of letters or digits, and will be electronically managed so the expiry date really is the expiry date.

How do I use a voucher code?

Click on our links for the deals, make a note of the code then, do your shopping. When you get to your basket/checkout, some sites will ask you to sign in before entering the promotion code, others will allow you to do so straightaway. You will find a box which asks you to enter your promotion code. Type in the code as you see it into this box and click to enter/ok it. It will then be applied to your basket, you can check this by looking at your basket, where you will find it reduced often with an explanation for discount.

Why don’t all stores have them?

Some retailers never discount, and there’s nothing that can be done about this. We are always trying to get you the very best deals, but certain brands will not discount.

Can I use a voucher code in store?

No. Sometimes voucher sites and magazines will give you vouchers which can be used in store. Some discounts may give you a downloadable voucher which you print off and can use in store. But you can not use a code in store, these are reserved for online only. We tell you about printable vouchers in our newsletter so make sure you sign up to receive that every week. Sometimes, the best way of shopping is to try on your clothes in the shop and then come back to chiconomise to make the most of the discounts by buying online.

How do you get discounts?

We have good relationships with lots of brands.  We negotiate exclusive deals for you and also share with you the deals that brands are openly promoting.

Can I use more than one discount code?

It depends on the site. Some codes can be used together, although more often than not, you can only use one code per sale. Sometimes if the code is for a different offer, for example a free delivery code and a discount code, you can use the two together. But it will depend on the site, and it’s a matter of try it and see.

How can I find out if the retailer I like has a discount?

Simple! just do a brand search on chiconomise.  Search the deals page to look for discounts and the calender to see if any of your favourite brands are having a sale.  We update our site daily so it's important to keep checking.  You can also follow us on Twitter or Facebook to see discounts as they happen.

How often do you put new discounts on chiconomise?

Daily, we scour the internet everyday for fresh deals. We’re constantly badgering your favourite stores, just so that you can get a great deal. We also update our Twitter and Facebook pages all throughout the day with the top deals. This means that you can find out the best deals around no matter where you are.

How long do voucher codes last for?

This depends on the brand and the offer. Each code will have an expiry date so make sure you follow it (they are listed on our offers). When it says it’s expired, it really is. The system deletes the code and you won’t be able to use it past this date.

What can I use a voucher code on?

Again, this is up to the brand. Some retailers will let you use a discount on everything, others will exclude sale items. If it’s a department store, you will find that discounts are often for a specific sector, such as womenswear or homeware. It’s worth reading the blurb to check that the deal works on everything, and sometimes it’s worth just trying it to see.

Sometimes, there isn’t a code just a link, why is this?

Some retailers prefer the link method. This way they can make sure that only websites they agree to can get the discount. The links are embedded and will take you straight to the discount. For example if a deal says 15% off Boden, but you type www.boden.co.uk into your browser you will not find the deal. You have to click the link which will take you to the site where you will be given the discount and it is usually automatically applied at the checkout.

What do links do to my computer?

Links usually put a cookie in your browser. This has no effect on your shopping experience. It helps retailers track how you got to their site. So if hundreds of people head to Oasis from chiconomise, we’ll be more likely to get a nice exclusive deal from Oasis, because we send traffic their way. Almost everything you click on from chiconomise works this way.

So now you know what they are and how to use them, it’s time to take advantage of the voucher code. Remember, if there are any brands you really want to see, drop us a line here and we will do our very best for you.

Happy shopping!
